The Unicorn: Ladies with long locks can attempt this up-front topknot. To get the look, pull hair into a high ponytail, just above the forehead. Twist the ponytail, then coil it into a bun and pin. Be generous with hairspray
MY THOUGHTS: I love this. I think its simple, chic and super modern. Perfect for those of you who have a grungy style but are still really into their looks! Hairstylist: this is super easy and super fun to show your clients an easy way to keep "cool!"
This was a really interesting article that discussed a shift in the culture of relaxers in relationship to desired hairstyles and how the "trend" of relaxing hair is beginning to slow down.
I think its a cool thing to embrace your natural texture. The ability for change is always there and of course we often love what we don't have, but what we have is great! Embrace It!!
"
But as women are becoming more conscious of not just what they put in their bodies, but what they put on their bodies, that trend is beginning to change. While relaxers remain popular, women also are returning to their “roots” and wearing their hair in a variety of different styles that don’t require chemical treatments.
According to Expressions: Eco Salon For All Ethnicities owner Blase (no last name provided) in Little Falls, this shift is mostly occurring among college- and middle-aged women who have become more aware of the harmful chemicals that are used in relaxers.
Women tired of dealing with those harsh chemicals are choosing to let their hair return to its original state so that they can make their hair healthier and embrace its natural beauty.
“We understand that our natural hair is beautiful,” Blase said.
Dita Von Teese was out for a day of shopping..... Cue Inspiration!
Personally I love Her! I also love vintage based styles. I think it's because it's nostalgic without having to live during the times. There is just an energy that is captivated from these times. Maybe it's from the media, movies & television (such as Mad Men) that brings this energy about?..... either way it's inspiring and gives us the ability to create something new with something old.... hence vintage!
I thought it would be fun to share these shots with you!
It seems Lady Gaga's mom used to cut her hair when she was younger. Funny thing about that is it wasn't by choice.
Apparentlyher mom used to cut her split ends while she was sleeping.
Why is this news floating about? Well she not only is telling the world about her secret hair stylist, but she's singing about it. Her new single "Hair" is about how parents try to change your looks, without realizing how important your hair and clothes are to your sense of identity.
In an interview about the song Gaga explained, "When I was young my mom and dad used to ask me to not leave the house dressed a certain way and asked me to change my hair."
"My mom would even cut my hair when I was asleep because I had really long split hairs, because I liked it really long like a hippy."
"Your hair is your glory and my hair represents my identity as it does represent the identity for many people."
I think with a song title like "Hair", we have to listen!
Miles Aldridge takes his signature vibe to an office setting for this month’s Vogue Italia. Charlotte di Calypso plays the role of an unproductive office worker while fashion editor Cathy Kasterine brings out sophisticated neutrals in wardrobe.
As fashion week has passed us and the trends are "in" I thought it would be fun to talk about some of the "trends" we saw and how to incorporate them into fun ways to wear your hair for homecoming or in a stylist point of view, some fun styles to show your girls for their "Big Date!"
The truth is that what's hot on the runway, rarely transcends into the world of high school tomorrow. That is a whole other world of trend. However, it doesn't mean, girls/stylists, that you cant get inspired by whats hot on the runway, right? I mean lets face it, if it's hot.... ITS HOT... right?
Lets take a little inspiration from the runways and put it in our UP DO's and give those boring old "homecoming up don'ts" a big boot in their spiral butt :)
Here are a few looks that I recommend for this years homecoming and why!
1. Christina Hendricks - Modern Mad Men 60's Loose Messy Style
Why I like this: It keeps you in fashion, it's fun and quite frankly it's hot. It represents a mature and modern woman. The look is sexy and loose; keeping a modern 60's vibe the look is very easy going for a long night out of dancing and shaking on the dance floor. No matter how hot or humid the environment might become, a look like this has enough structure and messiness to keep you looking sexy for your date all night long!
Also if your feeling even more Mad Men inspired put a little more volume into this look at the crown. This is a great way to really showcase the Mad Girl Inside of you!
2. Heidi Klum - Flower Power inspired messy braid.
Why I like: Running with the concept of the 70's, what better way to showcase the fashions to come than a hippie inspired messy braid. Once again it is all about security when you are flying around with your girls on the dance floor. Quite frankly, you can't get much more secure than this braid! If you are the type of girl who is a free spirit and is looking for a style that stays true to your self, then look no further! This style, as cheesy as I am to write this, is far out.
3. Stuff in Hair - No Fuss No Muss & A Lot of Stuff
Why i like: Tara (one of the writers for THB) wrote a post about how she is obsessed! with stuff aka accessories in hair lately (CHECK OUT HER POST HERE). From big to little the look is HOT! & has been embraced on the runway. I have to agree, I can't get enough either. Think anthropologie meets homecoming. Doesn't get much better than that. If you are the type of girl who really isn't in to fru-fruing it up but cares enough to bring a sense of style and sexiness, this is the look for you. Wear it with a low chignon, a messy loose up-do! (not up-don't) or just wear your hair down in a loose texture and let the accessory be the highlight of your hair. Remember this look is all about having fun, so if your going to do it, make sure you have fun while doing it!
Have any other suggestions? We would love to hear what you think is hot this year for homecoming!
Looking for something fun to bring to your salon this Halloween?
Exposure your guests/clients to this months cover of Bazaar in spain and give them a little fashion to their costumes. I think something like this is fun and it gets people excited for the fall season. If nothing else it is always an exciting way to incorporate a little spook with a lot of elegance.
This cover not only gives us a spooky high fashion vibe, but strikes a pose with fall style. Love It!
Cynthia Rowley Showcased her collection at this years Fashion week with a lot glam to the hair.
This look resembles a very similar look to what Shear Geniusseason 3 winner produced when she came up with her winning style in the finally, where she lamented hair pieces.
I think it's really great! Not to say this look is identical but I love the comparison in the subtleties. I just thought the similarities were interesting.
I love the idea of incorporating a look like this into a formal structured style. It really helps to put a futuristic hip edge to a soft elegant style.
Notice the comparison with Brigs winning look? Or is it just me? Either way I dig em both!
Before we get started on the hair it is important to know how to dress in this fashion.
Know matter what, you want to shop for garments that flatters your body type as a woman. In order to create a more softer feminine style, it is important to create a more feminine silhouette with your garments. So regardless of how we suggest you style your hair shop correctly. Because this look is HOT! and yes you can wear it well just know how to shop it. Need more help on the subject? Here is a great blog post of a few ideas on how to get started and how to dress it up a little softer.
With every great trend in fashion is a great trend in hair that must work in unison. Here a 5 great tips on how to wear your hair when wearing this fashion.
1. Tighten Up:
When wearing formal wear, wear your hair a little more masculine by pulling it back into a tight strong pony. This will help to compliment your style but still keeping it feminine by exposing your natural soft facial features. Looking to soften it up more, use a bang like in this picture. This will allow a little more softness around your face.
2. Let Your Hair Down:
Length is always a great way to create a more softer feminine style to your hair that accompanies a strong masculine style. Just make sure it's not too long. Hair that is long should be well maintained!
3. Let's Shag:
Wear a shag with a strong in your face bang. This picture is a great example. What this does is it really gives you a masculine skater boy look that accompanies some of your more funky strong fashionable outfits. The shaggy grungy length of this cut still gives you a soft look needed to keep it feminine but at the same time the bang helps to give you the edge!
4. Add Accessories:
This is the perfect way to soften a look. From head bands to flowers you can always girl it up with a fun accessory in your hair. Just make sure you don't go over the top with making it to girly, remember what you are wearing.
5. Cut it short!
There is nothing better to accompany this look than a short soft pixie. It not only compliments the style but it keeps a woman looking soft and sexy by exposing her cheek bones and jaw lines.
Have you ever wondered that question? Well the idea is always to create balance and symmetry by adding or taking away hair based on someones particular facial shape. The ideal facial shape is always oval. So as stylists we are always looking to create an oval hair shape using the hair and the facial shape that you have.
Having a hard time visualizing what you would need?
If these shots are any indication of what is to come in the world of hair, I am excited. These shots really give an energy of a natural organic feel to it. The obviousness would be the braid of course, but it's so much more than just the braid. The length, the side, the frizz. I love it!
So looking at these shots any and if they truly are foresight, be prepared to let your hair down and let the natural organic side out. Maybe also in the world of color a lot less bold looks. Look for soft natural colors to reflect the soft loose natural looks in style.
These pictures not only depict the iconic fashion figure of the 1960's, they show the iconic woman of the 60's today.
Look, we all know this "Mad Men" craze is in. However, in my opinion I have yet to see a real edge to it in the world of hair like I have this editorial. We have seen this with the clothes... just not quite there with the hair. The hair has always been just 60's. This creates something so much more. It is so refreshing to my eyes to see this woman. If I was a woman this would be the woman I would want to be. What ever the decade. 60's 70's 10's. Perfect!
Head & Shoulders announced on Monday, that they have insured Troy Polamalu's hair for one million dollars with Lloyd's of London, a British insurance and reinsurance market.
The Football star of the Pittsburgh Steelers hair is a homage to his Samoan heritage. The length of Polamalu's hair: 3 feet long (and counting). Quite a scary thought considering the man is in a contact sport in which almost anything in reaching distance is used to tackle and pull men to the ground.
Worst case senario? A football player gives him A Million Dollar Hair Cut (well Head and Shoulders anyways).
Have you seen this album cover? Its pretty bad awesome! Look out Lady Gaga Christina Aguilera is coming out swinging.
I am calling it right now, Christina is going to be big with this record and inspire a lot of hair and fashion trends from this.
Just from the cover alone it screams! the 80's of today. She is making a fashion statement full force with this look on the cover and fighting for the throne of the modern day Madonna.
Her hair is awesome! Perfect in this cover and I really can't wait to see what wonderful things come from this record.
Also she will have a show on VH1 that breaks through the trash of "reality " and gives us a little bit of reality with a "behind the music" based show.
So I just watched the new Shear Genius Episode tonight on my TiVo. I have to say I am extremely disappointed with the show. I feel that the challenges are weak, the judges are awful and only give negative remarks and the show, like the last 3 years, is striving so hard to be like project runway.
I would love to see them give the stylist's more time. The only person who's opinion I value is Orlando Pita, the mentor "Tim Gun" and I have to say even he falls a little short on this show. He really gives a lot of negative feedback and not a lot of positive reinforcement like Mr. Gun often does.
Well I am going to continue to critique the show week by week for the last couple of episodes and give my thoughts. I felt the right stylist (April) went home tonight. She has far too large of an ego, a bit of an extreme attitude and her work was sub par. Her styles tonight were plane and her heart shape hair cut was a joke. Watching her cut hair was insulting and showy. As a hairstylist I really don't value stylist's who make it all about them, clearly she does. Good Riddance to her and let the show continue.
April recently did an interview on her time on Shear Genius. After reading her interview I will say this, she has integrity, although I particularly do not value her as a stylist, she is true to her self and I very much value that. check it out: Shear Genius Season 3: Exclusive Interview with April Barton
This weeks winner: Matthew

Here are the critiques on the rest of the contestants. Jon: Not quite polished enough for me. Janine: She did O.K but once again to me not polished. Her first look was too plain and not enough volume for the tv/movie world and her second look was just not polished for me. Brian: Terrible and needs to go Brig: Her first look was great! Her second look was far to sloppy and not balanced. If she would have done well on the second look she would have won with out a doubt. April: The right choice was made here. Her look really had no taste and both challenges were lacking.
Hello everyone! I (gregory) am currently in Savahanna, Ga taking a pureology serious color care course.

In this video - The hairstylist blog will teach you how to cut a long layered hair cut with a disconnected layer and framing around the face. It will have a very similar look to Jennifer Aniston hair (hair cut) with a little bit of a twist! You will learn step by step instructions on how to cut this hair cut. You will also learn really great texturizing techniques. This is an advanced training video, not a basic hair cut. Notice the before and afters of the look for the transformation of this look. If you like the color you see, watch Katie's color, Highlighting around the face with dimensional coloring.
Basically this cut is broken down into 7 easy steps with an optianl 8th step.
Hope you enjoy!!
-Greg
Step 1
Isolate the top portion of the hair from temple to temple, creating a horse shoe partinging.
Take a 1 inch center section in the center back and cut blunt with a concave layer technique.
Move going center right over directing everything to the center.
Move going center left over directing everything to the center.
Step 2
Isolate the bottom (The hair that was just cut).
Take a 1 inch Mohawk section from front to back of crown.
Establish your disconnected layer ** Note your disconnected layer should be longer than your layer that was previous cut underneath.
Follow through the Mohawk section at a 45 degree angle cutting blunt from short to long.
Step 3
With the top section still isolated - Divide the hair from left to right with a center parting.
Starting on the right side Take diagonal pie shaped sections going from front to back.
Follow your guide staying at a 45 degree angle cutting the hair blunt from short to long.
Repeat on opposite side.
Step 4
Dry hair smooth and straight with minimal volume.
Step 5
Establish length by using a point cutting technique to create separation and texture on the ends.
*Optional to create a more angled back length by visually cutting the hair shorter on the sides and gradually getting longer towards the middle.
Step 6
Isolate the bottom hair from temple to temple leaving a small section in the center back out as a guide
Over direct hair up and over to the 45 degree angle to which it was cut and blend disconnection with texture by finding the disconnection on the bottom and point cutting on the top of each section.
Step 7 (*Optional - This will create more texture and separation around the face)
Take a triangle pie shape section in the front of the hair from which the point that the head slopes down to the forehead (view on the video to get a reference point).
Comb hair to a 45 degree angle and pinch or squeeze hair to have it fan out.
Deep point cut the hair for seperation.
Step 8
Visually slice cut the hair throughout the top layer to create separation and texture throughout the top disconnected layer.
