Hair Color Question & Answer: Taking Dark To Light - Level 4 Previous Colored to Level 7

Question: 


"I graduated from Paul Mitchell in 2010..... I'm naturally a level 7, but have been dying my hair darkish for about 2 years. ....The darkest part is probably a level 4 or 5. I really want to go back to something close to my natural color all over; a level 6 or 7. In school they always told me the ONLY way to do that would be lightening, which can be very damaging. 


At this point, I'm not as concerned with the integrity of my hair as I normally am. Couldn't I use a Color Remover? Every time I go to a salon they seem to talk me out of going lighter....is color remover not used in salons? I see a lot of people go from really dark to light blonde several times....so why can't I get anyone to get my hair a few levels lighter?! I guess my main question is: what do I need to [do] so that I can get what I want?!"

Answer:


Ok so there a few answers within this question. First we will tackle the process of how I would handle taking a previous colored level 4 to a level 7. 


Rather than attempting to change your entire color and use a "color remover" or "lightener" I would suggest the idea of creating a more dimensional based color and utilize some of the level 4 color that you have as a low light. Then if you still feel like you would like to have a one solid color you can do so in time. So rather than changing your hair over one "salon visit" you would do so over time. Even though the integrity of your hair is not your priority, as a hairstylist it has to be mine :)


Sounds great right!? So how would you do this exactly?? Answer..... Simple!!


Use a highlighting technique to create a lighter dimension. Using a standard full foil application pattern highlight the entire back of the head first using as many baby fine highlights as you can in order cover at least 50% of the hair. When finished with the back section... Allow this to process, do not move on to the front section.


(Lightener formulas - For fine hair 10 volume with lightener. For Medium/Coarse hair 20 volume with lightener)
** HOT TIP - Make sure when applying your sections of lightener to each foil you saturate the entire section consistently to ensure proper lift.


Once finished processing to pre-lightening to a  level 8/9 in the back. Shampoo, Condition and then Dry the Hair. 


Repeat the same process for the front/top sections.


**We are breaking up the sides to ensure a consistent lift and to ensure integrity strength to the hair. Yes it will take longer, but color correction should never be jeopardized for time.


Once the entire application has been completed and the hair is dry formalize a glaze/toner to create the desired result to which you are looking for. Utilize your color wheel to create your desired result. If a desired result is as neutral as possible make sure to use your complimentary colors... such as a red and green.


The result of this process will be a perfect level 7 with beautiful dimension and hints of low lights. If you prefer to go lighter... continue with the same processes (only picking up the darker pieces) on the next visit.




So...... To answer some of your other questions.

1. Yes salons do use color removers. It is always something to have on hand. 
2. The difference between a color remover and lightener is the level of strength and the ability to lift - in fact I am putting this in my notes to do a blog post about this!
3. If you are referring to celebrities as [seeing a lot of people going from light to dark] - always make sure to note that with celebrities there are often extensions and wig work involved, so sometimes it can be misleading. In my opinion the processes from dark - level 4 to light - level 7 is best done over time.

It's such a fun way to change your style, give your hair a little more volume or even better take your hair form a day/night look in seconds!

Here is a fun how to of how to make your short hair better with a head band. 


**For most of you, we know this might be easy, but for those of you who are not stylists, this might be very helpful!!

Step 1. Use a Texturizing product to rough up your hair texture and make it a little more pliable (easy to work with).

Step 2. Place and secure the head band roughly 4 fingers length from your front hair line or for those of you with bangs, just past the bang area.

Step 3. Pull pieces of your hair out from behind the head band and place them
over the elastic, to hide the elastic from showing.

Step 4. To increase volume, backcomb the hair behind the elastic. You do this by pulling strands of hair straight up and placing a comb in the center of the strand. Using the fine side of the comb push the hair strand down towards the scalp while holding the hair taught. This will create what is known as a Tease or Cushion to the hair.

Step 5. Once all of the volume has been maximized, spray your hair with a texturizing based hair spray to create hold and separation

Make Thin Hair Look Thicker With Hair Color!

Looking to take your super fine hair and give it a fuller-thicker appearance? It's Really Easy! Here's what you do:

One of the best ways to create thickness is in the bang area or throughout the perimeter. You can do this with color and creating depth. It's what I refer to as shadowing.

Shadowing is very very simple. 

For the bang area - Formulate a color at least 2 shades darker than your base formula. Use no more than about 2-4 foils and starting at the front hair line of the bangs, place your first foil in a weaving manner. Continue working your way up to the crown, in horizontal sections, making sure to never expose the darker color on the part line.

For the perimeter of the hair - Formulate a color at least 2 shades darker than your base formula. Out line the entire hair line, including front and back. Using foil apply a baby fine slice fore each section, in a horizontal manner, then skip a section and apply another foil in the same manner. Continue this throughout the entire hair line.

Thats It!!! Easy as...... Pie?

This is a fun segment we are going to try and work in every couple of months: We are going to take a Movie of the month and recreate one of the characters style from that movie!

This month: We are recreating Natalie Portman's hair from the movie Your Highness.

I loved all the random, loose texture, that she had in her hair durring the movie. I thought it would be a fun thing that you could recreate on yourself or for those of you who are stylists on your guests.

And then there were a few scenes where she had her hair thrown into a messy side fish tail braid. I think this is a great day/night technique that you can use everyday, not to mention fish tail braids are amazingly  fun!

A Fun Series Of Photos: Celebirties Looking Better With Down-Do's

The folks @ Total Beauty put together a fun series of photos with 5 celebrities taking their looks from very formal and styled to very relaxed and soft. I thought this was very relevant to what we have seen a lot lately, but also this isn't only relevant, it's true. Don't these girls look great!? Sometimes it's nice to let your hair down.

Here are my thoughts and some tips of how to achieve these styles.

Christina Aguilera

My Thoughts: This I thought was interesting. Reason why? Well, christina always look amazing with that elegance to her style and the look on the left is very elegant with a 40's inspired style. However, I would have to agree with this article she looks amazing with her hair a little loose. Maybe we are so used to seeing her with that Hollywood glam it's nice to see her with something a little more soft. So I guess we can say they both look great but change is always great! So I love it.

Get The Look: Using a smoothing based product, like paul mitchell quick slip, mixed with a light texture based product, like pureology power dressing. Apply throughly from roots to ends. Dry the hair with a flat brush constantly pushing the hair against the head going the opposite way hair falls. When the hair is 85% dry us a large sized round brush and finish drying to maximize volume.

Drew Barrymore

My Thoughts: Very similar to the above look in the before. However, the biggest difference is I am not so much a fan of this before look on Drew. It is all about letting your hair down. Using extensions with a slight wave and a little more of a rooty look in the color. Drew is able to express her 70's style and it looks Hot.

Get The Look: When the hair is dry. Take a very large curling iron, placing the barrel down, wrap the hair around the barrel around the iron without closing the clamp on the iron. Also make sure when wrapping the hair around the iron you leave the ends out.

Angelina Jolie

My Thoughts: Angelina in all honesty does not look great with her hair tightly back. When really getting a chance to look at her facial shape, it is clear that she looks most ideal with a little softer look around her face, giving her a more natural oval silhouette.

Get The Look: Using a root lifting product, like Redken Guts, apply product liberally at the root area. Blow dry hair 90% dry with your hands constantly lifting and pulling at the root and smoothing by creating tension with your hand. Take an extremely large round brush and smooth and lift to finish it off.

Avril Lavigne

My Thoughts: It was about time little miss Avril made a change. The look on the right gives her a fun, yet a little more mature look of elegance. What's great about a look like this is that its reversible. There is no reason for Avril to not stay true to who she is, so when she is feeling like she wants a Skater Boy, she can go right back to it.

Get The Look: When the hair is dry. Using a Medium Large curling iron roll all of the sections going diagonal back throughout the sides and back. With a horse shoe section on top of the head, roll all of the sections going back with a large curling iron, making sure not to leave any partings.

Denise Richards

My Thoughts: If this shot was done for Halloween then I get it, but unfortunately it was not. Denise looks great in this after. It gives her a little volume but not an overwhelming amount like we are seeing in the before. The 80's are fun when it's modern, but if we are stuck in the 80's well than its just bad hair.

Get the look: Take a horse section from the arch of the brow to the arch of the brow. Using the same technique as Avril's, using a medium sized curling iron, roll the hair diagnol back in very small sections. Release the horse shoe section and tease at the crown. If necessary lightly create texture towards the ends of the hair using a very large iron. Spray with a firm hair spray.

What an elegancy. Quite the fantasy bride right? Maybe I am cliche, but I guess when I see volume and texture it always is exciting on the runway.

What does this tell us about fashion and inspiration for the future? Well I can say volume has not been the topic of my blog posts but I think the loose messy vibe of the style is very connected to what I have written about.

Personally as a hair stylist, volume isn't exactly something I can have to much of. Do you agree?

I would say if this is any indication of what's to come, it's to say that volume never dies and loose "lazy" sexy elegant hair is very fun!

3. Back comb or tease hair to achieve maximum volume.

4. Fold the pony tail over itself and secure. For a really loose and messy look leave the ends out. For a more structured look tuck the ends into the bun.

5. Spray the hair with a volume based medium hold hair spray.

My Thoughts: This is exactly the hair I want to see on the runways. I love the way the stylist played of the inspiration of the designer and incorporated that look into the hair. I love the beach texture that is created in this look and the how to is soooo easy, it is definitely something we can bring into the salons and share with our clients

If you don't use aveda, that's OK. Every line has some form of comparable product that will more than likely get the job done!

Hair Colorist Wednesday! Continued!!

So... Where did we leave off?? .......

Thats right introducing you to Hair Colorist Wednesday!

Taking your Dull, Yellow, Blondes to A Beautiful, Shiny, Dimensional Blonde!

So my guest arrived and her hair was very typical highlighted blonde Natural Level 7. I see this more than anything else in my salon. Very blonde, very dull and not so very dimensional.

So lets break it down. What I did. Why I did it. How I did it and most importantly what I will do in the future.

Unfortunately do to technical difficulties or my accidental erasing of the picture.. we lost the before picture :( However, we do have the after picture! And in many ways its the most important. So when wondering what that before picture look liked, just think about that client that I described earlier.

Notice the depth and dimension of the within the bangs and underneath, while still maintaing a strong vibrant shade of blonde throughout the top layer.

So here we go.......

What I did: First off we are always going to access hair color the same exact way. Always! Where are we, well we covered that, so... where do we want to go and how do I get there. So lets rephrase this to....

Our Goal/Desired Look (Where do I want to be?): Strong Vibrant shades of Cool/Vanilla Blonde throughout top layer with soft dimensional natural dark blonde/light brown shades peaking through underneath.

And now the....

What I Did: First things first. Anytime you are starting with a new client always pretreat the hair. Also anytime you are working with blondes, pretreat the hair. In fact 99% of Hair Color should start with pretreatment. So naturally, we pretreated with a clarifying treatment - in this case Pureology Puriffy Shampoo and we used Pureology's Essential Repair Conditioning Treatment prior to our color service.

Now on to the good stuff:

There was no reason to lighten all of the blonde that we have. However, we can utilize the blonde that we currently have to give us a multi tonal blonde.So we Highlighted using a standard highlight placement with a powder lightener and 20 volume pro-oxide developer and pulled a 10 volume lightener through every third foils ends for a lighter shade of blonde, however most important part! We left out 2 large triangles on the sides. Within these triangular sides this is where we will create our dimensional color. We will use Redken shades EQ Formula of 1 oz 7NB and 1 0z 7G. Taking back to back weaving foils in a diagonal formation from bottom of the triangle sides to the top we applied the shades formula to create our natural dimension back into our hair color.

Once processed we glazed over the hair using a Shades EQ Formula of: 1/2 oz of 9v and 1 1/2 oz Clear

Why I Did It: Using these formulas and pre treatments for the blonde will allow a multi tonal shade of blonde but at the same time keeping the hairs strength and integrity in mind.

Using the triangular side technique for the dark allowed us to have a multi dimensional shade of colors without loosing the strong vibrancy of blonde throughout the top.

Glazing the hair allowed us to diminish the amount of yellow within the blonde hair and give us the more Cool/Vanilla shades that we desired.

In The Future: We will continue to highlight with a powder lightner and a 20 volume pro-oxide developer in a standard highlighting fashion however, we will continue to leave out the triangular sides and not foil anything in these areas. If you find that you are in need of more depth within these areas repeat the triangular sides and add the dimensional level 7 color. Important: you may need to alter the formulation depending on where you are starting.

How to properly apply hair color.

Recently I attended an amazing color class and I thought I would share a little bit about my new application discovery's with you.

Now possibly this might not be news for some of you? But for me and those of you who do find this as news, I think you will enjoy.

So we are taught when applying hair color to saturate the hair and apply to both sides of the section, especially on the gray, yes? Well in my case yes and as a colorist its something I have been doing for years.

Next time do 2 things different.

1. Take 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch sections, depending on density and porosity of the hair and apply your hair color to just the back of each section. By doing this the small sections and the compression will keep your color properly saturated and safe from the possibility of overlapping of color.

and...

2. When working around the hair line, especially grays, try using a brow brush to apply the color, to keep the color from smearing on to the scalp and prevent color from staining the skin.
These new hot tips have worked wonders for me, not only in time, but results. I urge you all to give it a go!

New Hair Cutting Video!: How to do a bob hair cut step by step

Hello everyone we have a new video up! This is such a fun way and fast way to cut an angled bob.
I have broken it down step by step for you to follow along with the video! I would love your comments and if there is anything that you are dying to see let me know.

Step by Step:

Section hair from the occipital bone diagonal back. Notice that it is the point to which the head naturally slopes down.

Over direct (bring all the hair to the central location) all of the hair straight up to the highest point of the parting and cut a straight blunt line

Take a horse shoe section from flat point of the back to the high temple area or point to which the eye brow arches.

Isolate the top

For finer hair textures like Jill's create a sub zig zag section to maintain weight and fullness towards the bottom.

Starting in the center back take a 2 inch pie shaped section (for those of you working on a more dense hair take 1 inch sections), over direct to the middle of the section, elevate at 90 degrees and cut short to long in a graduated manner

Notice the shape that is being taken

Continue working on the left side with 2 inch pie shaped sections over direct the hair back to the center and cut in the same manner: 90 degress elevation cutting short to long in a graduated manner

Continue working to the top of the ear in this fashion

At the top of the ear, over direct hair straight up and follow guide from short to long. To extend length slightly glide your hands out as you begin cutting short to long.

Check balance into back sections

Repeat this process on the opposite side

Drop down the isolated sections and begin Drying hair

Once hair is dry have guest look down

Cut the the base length, using a point cutting technique for softness, of the previous isolated sections to match the existing guide.

With the head upright check balance and clean up excess graduation.

Continue cutting length in a blunt cutting technique on the sides.

To add more texture and volume take a diamond shape section at the top of the crown

Deep point cut into this section creating a very shattered soft textured layer

Continue with a horse shoe section on top of the head and over direct back to balance the textured layer

Check visually for balance

For even more added texture and separation comb the hair forward and slightly slide cut into the hair creating more separation. Be carefully not to cut on top of the hair but behind it, so the layers are not as exposed but have a more invisible look, to maintain fullness to the hair.

For areas that are a little more fat or bulky, slide cut on the top to remove the excess bulk. But only in those areas.

Continue on the opposite side.

Always check balance and shape in the back at the very end.

3 Bob Do's & Dont's

At the salon often times there are many principles I live by with each of my hair cuts, wither it's a version of a bob or a long layered hair cut. By following these principles it allows me to really take that cut or style to another level and really help to create a better personalized cut. So next time you are going to the salon and getting a bob haircut or a version of the bob, take some of these tips into consideration. Especially for those of you who are doing the cutting!

Bob Do's:
1. Always have softness to the weight point of your bob (the point where the hair becomes one length from the point to which it is stacked). A great way to create this look is to add texture to the ends of your hair by using your texture or thinning shears. The softness makes your eyes move more to the over all shape and less to a blunt line that is often created from this hair cut.
2. Blow dry your bob with a flat brush (square or rectangle brush, sometimes known as paddle or vent brush). Brush the hair in the opposite ways of which it falls when blow drying. This helps to give you a more natural looking bob.
3. Try some form of asymmetry for most all symmetrical facial shapes. A great way to do this is with side bangs or a side part and allowing one side of your bob to lay a bit heavier than the other side. Asymmetrical does not mean that your hair cut has to be longer on one side than the other, it just means it needs a point to which one side is different than the other. Bob Dont's:
1. Do not have a true layer to your bob cut. Instead try a textured (random peicey hair) layer. You can create this by over-directing (pull all the hair to one location) the hair to the top of the crown (top point of head) and use a texturizing cutting technique to break the hair up.
2. More often than not I never leave the front corners of a bob to blunt (A very hard edge). Instead create a softness around the face. Even on a blunt bob it can be very harsh around the face and can often make the cut seem helmet like. Instead create a more softer look by slightly rounding or texturizing the front corners of your bob style.
3. When having highlights on your bob style, never highlight underneath the point to which your brow arches (but make sure not to exclude the hair around your face). This will help to keep your color more natural looking and especially keep your color from looking spotty.
