Sometimes You Just Need Your Hair Stylist.

This guy has had a long night.
Bad Hair Day? Sometimes you just need your hair stylist!

Hair Chalking. What do you think? Is it safe? Is it damaging? Would you do it? Let Us Know

This is hair chalking:

In the sense of hair chalking, it is creating a truly temporary design to your hair, by accenting different strands of hair in strong vibrant colors.

Want to learn how to do this? Its quite simple really:

Step 1. Section out a panel that you wish to chalk and then dampen your hair using a spray water bottle, like so:

Step 2. Working with the dampened hair section, hold it tight and rub the colored pastel chalk downward going with the grain of the hair.

It is very important that you use this type of chalk! This is pastel chalk
** Great idea would be to use a surface that is easy to clean or a long piece of paper, for easy clean up.

Step 3. Using the desired heat source for style (i.e. curling iron, flat iron). I recommend a curling iron. Use the preferred iron over the now colored strands to lock in the color and secure the desired style.

I guess we can't say this trend is super new at this point but I definitely want to know what you think!

My thoughts: This is fun! It's easy and really anyone can do it. As a stylist it's something fun I would love to offer people at the salon.

In doing this, I haven't noticed anything that warrants damage to the hair. The heat aspect made me slightly worried, but after working with it, I think it's fine!

If you have super duper fine hair work on the lowest heat setting possible and be very cautious with your hair. Other than that have fun with it!

Should last no longer then 2-4 days.

A Story To Make You Thankful & Inspired!

There are so many things to be thankful for, even more so on a day like today. We should all be thankful for the amazing world that we live in and the amazing industry we are apart of.

When I read this article I just had to post it and share it with everyone!

** This article comes to us by way of SalonGalaxy.com and was written by SalonGalaxy's Art DiGiacomo

Being Inspired by a Blind Hairdresser
Being Inspired by a Blind Hairdresserby: Arthur DiGiacomo
On a whole we our own a group of talented  individuals in an industry full of amazing creativity, but the individual ego and our competitive nature sometimes does not allow for the true meaning, of why we are who we are to shine through.
As I waited for everyone to join me in the conversation on a conference call, I could not help but think how a person without sight, might be able to have a career as a hairdresser in the beauty industry.  It was when I was a creative young upcoming hairdresser that I use to kid with my clients and say I could cut their hair with my eyes closed. (Yes, I would shut my eyes and take a snip).
As you know hairdressing is a visionary profession. A profession where the work needs to been seen to be appreciated and especially to know completely about facial structures, hair texture, color and motion to create the looks that get published and win awards. We preach that education is the key to success in the beauty industry.
I am here to add it also takes a determination to bear the brunt of a bad marriage, money, drugs, alcohol, abuse, depression, and especially the will to live through life and what it bestows on us on a personal level, from time to time.
I have said many times to my children, friends, and colleagues that it is life’s experiences that give you wisdom.  But to gain that wisdom we need the desire to learn – “It is important to go through life being a good speaker and teacher, but it is more important to be a great listener and student”.
The longer we live the more we learn.  Wisdom is gained through Experience !

Happy Thanksgiving From The Hair Stylist Blog!: Food Hair Recipes

We hope you enjoy all of your delicious yummies today!

But while your cooking and eating all of your great delights, don't forget... Food is not just for eating!

Check out these great beauty tips that you can achieve with your Thanksgiving ingredients.

1. Hair Conditioning Mask. Main Ingredient: Olive Oil.

As many of you may or may not know, olive oil is an active ingredient in a lot of hydrating and smoothing based hair care products. But, did you know you can use it by itself as an excellent mask for all your conditioning needs. (please note this is not something you want to do often as it is highly concentrated and can rupture the hairs natural environment if over used; however, it is a great at home treatment that can be used form time to time)

Here is what you do....

Apply 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil into your hands and slightly warm up the oil by rubbing your hands together. Starting on the ends of your hair apply the oil throughout the hair all the way towards the scalp of your head. The amount you’ll use should vary depending on the length and thickness of your hair.

Next, use a warm, damp towel and wrap it around your head, covering the treated hair. Leave it on for approximately 45 minutes.

Finally, rinse out the olive oil with shampoo, approximately 2-3 shampoos is ideal. Allow your hair to air dry.

2. Body Scrub. Main Ingredient: Brown Sugar

To create the scrub, mix together one half cup of coarse brown sugar with one tablespoon of honey, a little olive oil, and 1/4 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice.

Apply the scrub over your entire body, then rinse. The scrub not only smells delicious, but leaves your skin feeling ultra-smooth.

This scrub will help to get rid of dry winter skin, as well as prep your body for any sunless tanner you may be applying.

Hair Color Wednesday! November Brings More Red Heads; Before & Afters Included!

Hey everyone. I know it's borderline Thursday. However, being that it is Thanksgiving eve I was traveling in a car for a few hours making me a little late for this post.

But have no fear, Hair Color Wednesday (Thursday shh!) is here!:

So last Hair Color Wednesday we showcased Demetria Lovato's new red hair. If you missed that check it out here

Well 2 weeks later we are looking at a similar situation and the exciting part is, we have before and afters! So check it out!:

Her hair is previously highlighted with a natural level 7 golden base.

We decided to prep color her hair. The reason we decided to do this is because we wanted a strong foundation of copper in her hair while at the same time encouraging a slight amount of gold within the color.

Our formula of choice for prep coloring (filler): level 7 Golden Copper - 7GC

We only processed this color for 10 minutes.

Once Processed we applied our final color gloss on her hair dry.

We wanted to use a formula for her color that was rich in copper but still emphasized a little red. We also wanted to make sure we had a strong amount of depth to her color to really brighten her eyes and skin tone.

Our formula of choice for her color: 1.4 oz of level 5 Copper Brown (a red/orange tone), 0.4 oz of level 6 Copper Brown (a red/orange tone), 0.2 oz of 6 Red Red (your strongest red based color).

And this was our final look:

Here is a picture with sun exposure
This picture has a little less sun exposure.

Christina Aguileras Outfit Might Have Been A Must Not; But I Loved Her Hair And I Say A Must Hot

The title pretty much sums it all up.

From what I have seen around the WWW it seems most of the Internet has claimed Christina Aguilera the worst dressed at the AMA's last night. That's cool and well I kind of get it. But.....

I Loved Her Hair. Great texture and volume; You can't go wrong!

I liked it so much, I figured I would do a little how to style inspired by Christina Aguilera's hair from the AMA's.

The style is more about creating the texture she had. Once you get the texture you can have fun with it! I made it super messy and big - Think modern 1980's big hair! Is that an oxymoron? Or is it just not even possible? Well..... You decide:

Wear it big. Wear it small. Do what you feel, just have fun with it.

Guarantee Me!

Ever have a guest call you 2 weeks after a haircut stating that it is too long, uneven, doesn't like the cut...etc...or they call 6 weeks later and you want to let them know it's time for their next apppointment-not a free cut fix.

Or how about a highlight guest who always calls the next week complaining about one strand of hair she wants blonde that didn't get highlighted?

I'm sure we all have the guests who sometimes take advantage...but we also have guests who have a genuine and legit aggravation or guests who never speak up when they are unhappy and then never return. Personally I would like to hear it when my guest is unhappy-otherwise how can I ever learn from my mistakes?

One solution we use in my salon is having a guarantee policy in place for the guests to be aware of. Each new guest fills out a contact information sheet that states both our cancellation and guarantee policy. Our policy basically explains that our guests have 48 hours to inform us of any challenges they are having with their services for a no charge correction. Any time after 48 hours there may be either a slight fee to cover the cost of products- or if it has been a while since their service it may be the actual cost of the service.

You want to be as accommodating as possible- after all they are your business and you don't want them to leave you over something silly. But at the same time you want to be smart about your business and have something in place that protects you as well from being taken advantage of. I also think it's nice for guests to know that they have the opportunity to inform you of anything they don't like about their hair after they leave. The general public seem to just leave a salon if they are not happy with their visit- this gives them a chance to come back and get what they want and then be satisfied.

Always analyze each situation. You don't always have to enforce your policy if you know and understand a certain situation- you don't have to be the policy nazi.

Inspiration Femle #2: Milla Jovovich

You may know her from Resiednt Evil, The Fifth Element, or some other ramdon sci-fi movie...but Milla Jovovich is not only an actress...

There are literally tons of movie pictures of Milla holding guns-Google it

She is a musician, fashion designer, model, and a mother. Talk about being a busy lady, right?

Where does she find time to do it all??? She is literally like a modern day Super Woman.

I love Milla not only for the tons of things that she does but also for her courage to do these things as well. She is an inspiration to us all. She is unafraid to pose completely nude, comfortable with being totally ambiguous in photos, and daring enough to fight off zombies while looking totally fierce and hot.

That is why she is my Inspiration Female #2

Vampires & Warewolves Love IT&LY Hair Products

Well the one's in Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 Anyways. Check out this article which includes some great quotes from Bonnie Cleavering, lead hair on Breaking Dawn Part 1:

"
IT&LY HAIRFASHION, N.A., Inc. (http://www.italyhairfashion.com) President/CEO Richard Zucckero is proud to announce supplying the hair department with the company’s Purity Design professional hair care line and styling tools for the much anticipated release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1”. This will be the third time the company has supplied the hair departments and personal hairstylist to Kristin Stewart, Bonnie Clevering with IT&LY products. Ms. Clevering created Bella’s hairstyles utilizing IT&LY HAIRFASHION Purity Design Products for this production plus next year’s Breaking Dawn - Part 2 scheduled for November of 2012.

Bonnie Clevering shares her on-set hairstyling secrets and inspirations:
“The inspiration was simple” says Bonnie. “I had to remain consistent with Bella’s previous looks which was soft and casual.” She adds, “For the wedding scene, I created a romantic but simple up-do which was a change for Bella’s character style”.

All of Bella’s looks began with the foundation of a great haircut. Bonnie Clevering created a layered cut around the face and at a chin length level while the back was longer and layered. To maintain her hair color, Bonnie would use a brown color enhancement like Riflessi to give vibrancy and tone to her hair for film. To enhance Kristen’s look during some of the scenes, Bonnie would add extensions depending on whether Kristin’s hair was worn up or down or in braids. The wedding scene consisted of the hair rolled up at the nape area with braids. For a soft finish, small strands from the temple area were allowed to fall naturally to frame the face.

Even though her hair was dense, Bonnie had to maintain her look for 12-15 hour days of filming. To achieve her look through various scenes and weather, each morning after shampooing, she would apply conditioner to the shaft area only. For lift and volume, Bonnie would apply IT&LY HAIRFASHION’S Pure Style Mouse (Strong) to the root area to serve as a root lifter while using
Pure Glaze Gel to the shaft. It was important to use products that would prevent her natural oils from weighing down the hair. Next, Bonnie would blow dry her hair using a small bristle brush at the root area for added lift, switching to a medium round brush to finish the shaft area. After blow drying, she would use a jumbo marcel curling iron, running it through the shaft area just to heat up each section and then switch to a ¾” marcel iron to create a bend. To finish, she sprayed a light hairspray by IT&LY HAIRFASHION called Pure Definition Spray.

According to Bonnie, “The greatest challenge was the various weather conditions but filming scenes in Baton Rouge, Vancouver and the US Virgin Islands played havoc on Kristen’s fine, silky hair. So I needed products that would allow me to comb the hair out and re-blow dry the hair without any tack or pulling of the hair.”

About Bonnie Clevering: Bonnie built her career with her early work with Frank Sinatra, Bette Davis, Kim Novak and Elvis Presley. Her continued success goes hand in hand with her increasingly exclusive list of clients such as Jennifer Aniston, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Hilary Swank, Al Pacino, Julianne Moore, Tim Allen, Kristen Stewart, and Julia Roberts (whom Bonnie has worked for ten consecutive films). Ms. Clevering is also a recipient of the 2010 IT&LY HAIRFASHION Honorary IT&LY HAIRFASHION Artisan Award.

About IT&LY HAIRFASHION: In 1989, IT&LY HAIRFASHION N.A., Inc. http://www.italyhairfashion.com began its mission to create a company that would manufacture and distribute the finest quality, professional hair color products. These products would include complete hair color systems from the initial cut & color to unique after-color products that would be guaranteed to extend the "just colored" look, feel and condition of your clients' hair

$$$ INVENTORY BLUES $$$

Do you ever find that you have way more retail not moving from their shelves as quickly as they should? Yeah, you can put on the pressure for everyone to "sell their retail"- but also keep in mind that maybe it's the products that are in your inventory that just aren't selling at all.

This is pretty common- you have a product line so you want to carry everything in that line only to find several items are still there from the day you ordered them. No biggie. Simple solution- put the items that are not selling up for a great discount- get them out of there and never order them again unless someone wants a special order for them.

It there an item in your inventory that just won't sell?

It's better to stock up on the faster selling items that are always flying off the shelf than to invest in items that rarely leave the salon.

Another idea- if your guest does want to purchase an item that you don't happen to have on hand or you are a salon that maybe cannot afford right now to have a big inventory- offer a discount for purchasing it in advance- this way you are offering an incentive for your guest to buy it here and now- rather than them going to the drug store down the street that somehow ended up with OUR SALON PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS- Don't even get me started on that.

In my salon I will usually say something like: "Sally Sue wanted you to take PeePoop's shampoo and conditioner home with you today. We don't have those products in right now- but we can give you 10% off both products for buying them today. Once it comes in we will call you and you can come pick it up at your convenience!" And then they are all like, "Oh, how awesome...this is SOOOO AMAZING, I am so excited about this that I will take three of each and pay for shipping and handling...."....not really. But that is what plays in my head.

My biggest thing: I hate it when people throw their hands up in the air and think, "oh well, there is nothing I can do about it."-

Whaaaa we don't have it here they aren't going to buy it...and whaaa I can't sell any retail...Well- in the day and age where we can save lives with our bare hands, yeah, you can. You just have to do something about it.

Be smart about your business. If something isn't working- try something else.

If you have any questions about selling retail or little helpful hints let me know, I am happy to help!

I've gotta RUST for life...

Just a little back ground on me...I'm from Florida. This means that any chance I got I am trying to recreate a feeling of season. We have none. SOOOO if that means I have to find teeny tiny little ways of making it feel like September-November, I will.

This post is dedicated to a color. RUST! This auburny, warm, chestnutty, orangy-red hue makes me feel like I am in a Midwest town riding my bike down a street lined with changing leaves...

...it makes me feel like I am sipping a Chai Tea while sitting by a roasting fie place, it makes me wish I was knitting a woolly scarf...well not that last one, but you get the jest.

I find this color popping up everywhere: Hair! Nails! Fashion! OLD cars and fences!

How does RUST make you feel? Does it make you feel how I feel? I promise you, this isn't the last time you will be seeing this color...I think it is going to be around to stay for a while- so if you haven't bought, made, or stolen from your sibling anything of this color it's not too late!

Rust In Peace my fellow readers.

Hair Removal Company Suing Kim Kardashian For False Statments

Well its seems Kim Kardashian is scamming us again. This time it's in our industry. Words for money seems to be her game. Does that make her a Promotional Escort?

Kim Kardashian is being sued by the Hair-removal company, Radiancy. Allegedly she has made multiple false and misleading statements via social media and television appearances.

During an appearance on "The Wendy Williams Show" she claimed to have been using the product on her entire body. However, the company is very clear that the product is in no way to be used on the face, head, ears, neck, nipples, genitals or around the anus

I can see how this is a complete exaggeration on her part and it was highly unlikely that she meant she was using this product in these areas.

But, this was the kicker for me anyways...

According to Radiancy, Kardashian was tweeting last December that she began using the product and was loving the results, even though she had only been using the product for a few weeks. TRIA (the product being used) states she wouldn't begin to see results from the product for at least 90 days. In other words, it would be highly improbable that Kim would have noticed any result during that time.

Radiancy is asking that Kardashian stop making the allegedly false claims, and is also seeking unspecified damages.

This is interesting, that is for sure. Who knows with these celebrity's and their endorsements. I mean in the end that's what it is right? Just a public figure making money for the "act" of using a product.

Crazy for Crochet!

Just wanted to share this online store with you. Grace, the designer, makes the most amazing and detailed scarves. The detail is so cool and has so much whimsey to the pieces- the little flowers, loops, leaves...turns your neck into artwork!

The flower on this scarf actually doubles as a brooch!!!

Grace also shows your several different ways to wear each piece- making them super versatile as well. Each scarf runs around $40- which is pretty fair considering the many ways to wear them, the attention to detail, and also the fact that they are all original handmade works of art!

OPTION ONE

OPTION TWO

OPTION THREE
And can you beleive there are more suggestions on how to wear this scarf??? Love it!!!
